SIM lock:

A simlock, Network Lock, carrier lock, imei lock or (Master) subsidy lock is a technical limit built into CDMA and GSM mobile devices by manufacturers to be used by carriers to limit using these phones to a particular countries and/or networks. This is unlike a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't enforce any SIM constraints.Unlocking a cell phone is nearly universally legal. Also, it is often legal for providers to force SIM locks for certain amounts of time, varying by area.

Unlocking Technology:

A smartphone can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the network operator. Alternative mechanisms consist of software operating on the device or a computer or laptop connected to the phone, hardware devices that link to the handset or over-the-air by the provider. Typically the unlock operation is permanent. The code required to eliminate all locks from a cell phone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the phone is carrier locked it will usually show one of these messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

The primary reason to unlock a mobile phone handset is usually to be able to use it with another SIM card. Consumers may need to keep on using their smartphone but with a different provider or while traveling overseas they may need to connect to a foreign network by using a prepaid subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Many companies provide a network phone unlocking service . This service needs people that want to unlock a mobile to supply their IMEI number to a unlocking company and in most cases they will also need the country and cellular network the mobile phone handset is locked to, sometimes sent through email or entered on their website. The company then will provide (at a cost to you) a unlock code for the handset.
