When I first met the team who are creating Deepworld, an 2D Sandbox-style building game that is similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I informed them that the project would be bigger than they thought. They've had a lot of experience in developing servers and software, but running a game this large requires an investment of a significant amount. They seem to have come to an agreement. Kickstarter was created to raise funds in the early stages of development and servers.

The group is offering several prizes to those who support it, including your own personal servers and worlds, art books and other swag, as well as the possibility of winning your own items, a name or even images in the game itself. The goal is to raise US$20,000 all in all, and as of this writing, the team has raised about $4,000. It's uooka time They are planning to make the project a full-time occupation, and this money will enable them to do so.

I'm sure I'd like them to be successful. Deepworld is stunning, and I agree with you when I first saw it. I think that the Mac (and iOS) would greatly benefit from a game like that.
