SIM lock:

A SIM-Lock, network-lock, CARRIER LOCK, IMEI-Lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock is a technical limit built into GSM and CDMA mobile phones by manufacturers for use by providers to restrict the usage of these phones to particular countries and/or networks. This is contrary to a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not impose any SIM limitations.SIM locking is very common if subsidized handsets are sold with pre pay contracts. It is important to note, however, that the technology accompanying with the smartphone must be compatible with the systems used by the network carrier. A GSM mobile phone is only going to work with a GSM carrier and will never operate on a CDMA network. Moreover, a CDMA mobile phone is only going to work with a CDMA network and isn't going to function on a GSM service. Take note that more sophisticated (2013 and newer) pricier mobiles are capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM technologies, letting customers to utilize their phones on any network.

Unlocking Technology:

A smartphone can be unlocked simply by entering a code provided by the network operator. Alternative mechanisms contain software running on the handset or a pc attached to the phone, hardware devices that link to the handset or over-the-air by the service provider. Almost always the unlock process is permanent. The code needed to do away with all locks from a mobile phone is referred to as the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the handset is network locked it will typically display one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

Mobile handset makers have commercial incentives both to enhance SIM lock protection (which placates service providers and will allow exclusivity discounts) and then to weaken it (increasing a phone's overall appeal to users who typically are not interested in the provider that offers it). Furthermore, making it too hard to unlock a handset may possibly make it significantly less attractive to network service providers who've a legal responsibility to supply unlock codes for some handsets or in specific countries.

Unlocking Services:

Several businesses provide a carrier phone unlocking service . This service requires those people whom need to unlock a handset to provide their IMEI number to a unlocking company and frequently they will also ask for the country and network the mobile is locked to, either sent through email or submitted on their web-site. The organization then will supply (at a cost to you) a unlock code for the handset. For a few brands including Nokia and Samsung several services additionally deliver special remote-unlocking software with directions, where a cable is necessary to remove the SIM lock at home. Such suppliers may well email the unlocking code or software which will remotely unlock the unit. The cost for unlocking a mobile phone may differ based on the mobile phone network it is locked to and the mobile phone model itself, as every unlock code is unique to each individual device.
