Minecraft Java Edition has always been operating pretty much as it was prior to Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft. Bedrock Edition came along to integrate with the Microsoft account system, but Java has been on its own little Mojang account island until now. Minecraft servers Java Edition will soon require a Microsoft account to play and you'll also get an exclusive cape for your troubles.

In early 2021, you will be required to transfer your Java or Mojang account to the Microsoft account system. Mojang states that this is to introduce two-factor authentication in order to provide enhanced security, however it could also lead to improved parental controls including chat and invitation block and account integration between Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Mojang does not plan to alter Minecraft mods or PvP. Java and Bedrock will remain separate games. You'll continue to be able to play using your existing Java username, but when you sign up for an account with a Microsoft account for the first time, you might need to change your account's name. You can combine your Minecraft logins if you already have a Microsoft account.

Mojang is offering a capethat was previously the most exclusive Java Edition item: to make the transition easier. Participating in the migration will provide you with a cape for free. While it will not have the Minecon exclusive patterns however, it will let everyone feel a bit royal.

While nothing is likely to change, players still have concerns. For instance, the more restrictive terms of service offered by Microsoft could lead to bans that could lead to certain players being shut out of Minecraft.

Further details can be found in the FAQ as well as the official announcement. We'll see how this shakes out in the first quarter of 2021.
